Charanga Habanera isn't the traditional Cuban ensemble with only violins and flutes. Since the early 1990s, it has played timba, a hopped-up modern salsa frequented on Havana's club circuit. Timba uses every bit of the Afro-Cuban propulsion of mambo, rumba and guaguancó, with voices and trumpets jabbing back and forth. The group deploys five lead vocalists, not including David Calzado, who sometimes steps forward to sing a few hoarse lines or play M.C.; aside from his busy role as band director.

Charanga Habanera has shared the stage with internationally recognized artists such as Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Barry White, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Kool & The Gang, and Whitney Houston and has taken their signature Salsa/Timba synergy all over Japan, Europe, Latin and North America.
