Participants and fans packed the streets of downtown Los Angeles for the three-day event filled with great basketball and live entertainment
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8, 2010 - The second-annual Nike 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at L.A. LIVE wrapped up competition today after completing more than 5,000 games, among the 1,072 registered teams over the last 48 hours.Â Participants and fans packed the streets outside L.A. LIVE, STAPLES Center, the parking lots along Figueroa St. and along Chick Hearn Court filling more than 60 courts with the best basketball players from throughout Southern California and the nation.
In addition to the high quality of play, Saturday was highlighted by the Nike 3 on 3 Slam Dunk Competition, which featured the best dunk artists from across the country.Â Â The contest was won by Terry \"T-Dub\" Cournoyea, a 5'9\" veteran slam dunk competitor who has won more than 40 national and international slam dunk competitions.Â He won the highly contested contest by posting a perfect score on his final dunk: a 540 degree windmill jam.
\"The incredible atmosphere, competitiveness among all brackets and hard work by our staff, volunteers and sponsors helped make this a memorable experience for the thousands of participants and fans who made the second-annual Nike 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at L.A. LIVE such an unbelievable and overwhelming success,\" said Francesca Leiweke, Event Director, AEG. \"The quality of play and live entertainment throughout the weekend created an electrifying atmosphere from the moment we tipped-off to the conclusion of today's Nike Elite Division.\"
Sunday's competition was highlighted by the Nike Elite Division Finals for the six-foot and under, six-foot and over, and women's brackets. Team Ballerz by Law, made up of team members from Huntington Beach and Fresno, won the six-foot and under title with a 20-17 victory over GCS Forensics, defending champions of the event. Team Ballerz secured the win with a dominating performance inside the paint.
The women's elite champions TBA traveled from Seattle, Portland, OR, and Canada to take top honors.Â They controlled the game from the start and cruised to a 20-11 victory.
The highly-competitive six-foot and over bracket was won by team VBL Goon Squad of Venice Beach 20-19. The game went down to the wire with Goon Squad hitting a late free throw to clinch the title.
Winning teams of all Elite Divisions were awarded $2,000, four night stays at the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas and JW Marriott Los Angeles at L.A. LIVE and an Alphasonik sound system.Â
One dollar from each participant entered in the Nike 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was donated to the Ronald McDonald house Charities of Southern California, the official charity of the event.
The 2010 event more than doubled in size from the inaugural event making it the largest 3 on 3 basketball event in California.Â Event organizers will look to continue to growth in the third installment of the event.Â
