LOS ANGELES, JUNE 19, 2010 - Lakers fans planning to attend Monday's 11 a.m. championship parade are highly encouraged to line the two-mile Figueroa Street parade route between 12th Street to the north and Jefferson Boulevard to the south, as all the immediate areas surrounding STAPLES Center and the L.A. LIVE sports, residential and entertainment district will be restricted by the Los Angeles Police Department and Department of Transportation.
The Lakers also encourage all fans to remember to celebrate safely and responsibly, as the parade will be a family event, and small children will be present. Parents are reminded to keep their children close, as prior championship celebrations have seen some young children become separated from their parents. Attendees are also encouraged to drink water and use sunscreen, since many are likely to be standing along the Figueroa corridor for several hours and the forecast calls for sunny weather.
Restaurants within L.A. LIVE will remain open during parade hours, yet access will be restricted to the district's northern entrance off Olympic Boulevard. The entire southern side of L.A. LIVE will be restricted with absolutely no public viewing of the parade from 11th Street/Chick Hearn Court between Figueroa and Cherry Streets due to planned LAPD and DOT road closures.
Besides the Figueroa Street parade route between 11th Street and Jefferson Boulevard, the LAPD and DOT will close the following streets in the immediate STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE area:
- Figueroa Street between Olympic and 11th Street
- 11th Street/Chick Hearn Court between Figueroa and Cherry Street
- Cherry Street between Olympic and Pico Boulevards
LAPD/DOT street closures further along the parade route include:
- Flower Street between Washington and Jefferson Boulevards
- Jefferson Boulevard between Figueroa and Hoover Streets
- And Figueroa Street between Jefferson and Exposition Boulevards where there is ongoing construction
LAPD/DOT will begin closing the immediate area surrounding STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE approximately 12 a.m. (PDT) on June 22.
The Lakers will establish a restricted area for credentialed news media, running northeast between the Southwest VIP and 11th Street Entry to STAPLES Center. Players will walk along this restricted area roughly 20 minutes before the parade begins en route to the float that will carry the team down Figueroa Street.
The Lakers will allow all news media with Laker Season Credentials access to this area before the parade, and also into the STAPLES Center Main Concourse inside the 11th Street Entry following the parade to attempt to secure player comments and visuals.
Other news media that do not possess Laker Season Credentials can apply for special parade credentials by having an assignment editor or similar professional fax a request on affiliation letterhead to the Laker media relations' offices at 310.426.6105 no later than 10 a.m. Sunday morning. The Lakers media relations department will then call to confirm credential requests Sunday afternoon.
All news media - both those possessing season credentials and those with special parade credentials - must meet Laker media relations staff at the corner of 11th and Cherry Streets on Monday morning to receive dedicated news media wrist bands.
News media (especially those without vehicle mounted microwave equipment) should also be prepared for very limited parking. Parking Lot #1 is being reserved for microwave television trucks only with a maximum capacity of two trucks per media outlet. Other media should consider Lot 7 at the southeast corner of 11th and Figueroa Streets, which will open on Sunday night between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and then reopen Monday morning at 4 a.m. to accommodate early arriving news media. One and two-day parking rates will apply.
The Lakers will provide a complementary pool feed of the parade to all participating members of the RTNA of Los Angeles.
