America's Biggest Cycling Race Arrives in Downtown Los Angeles at L.A. LIVE Saturday, May 22 for Important Time Trial

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES URGED TO PLAN AHEAD IN ORDER TO AVOID TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Downtown Los Angeles (May 13, 2010) - As Stage 7 of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California makes its inaugural stop at L.A. LIVE, Downtown Los Angeles will host cycling's best cyclists as they compete in the race's decisive individual  time trial.

For eight days, California will again be the backdrop of what promises to be one of the most exciting sporting events in the world of professional bicycle racing.  This year, Lance Armstrong, three-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer and one of the best fields of cyclists ever to compete on American soil will be racing the streets of Downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, May 22. 

Stage 7 of the eight-day race will pit the riders against the clock as they compete on a 10-mile course.  The riders will leave in one minute intervals starting at 11 a.m. in front of the Los Angeles Convention Center and complete their time trial at the finish line, located on Chick Hearn Ct. at L.A. LIVE.  Racing begins at 11 a.m. and will conclude at 4:15 p.m.  The course will be completely closed to traffic beginning at 10 a.m.  Normal traffic flow is expected to resume by 5 p.m.  The riders will be traveling in both directions on Figueroa St., Exposition Blvd., Menlo Ave., 11th St., and Olive St.

One northbound and one southbound lane of traffic will remain open on Figueroa St. between Venice Blvd and Jefferson Blvd.  A single lane of traffic also will be established for westbound traffic on Temple St. for access to the LA Cathedral between Main St. and Grand Ave.  A single southbound lane between Temple St. and 1st St. will allow access to the Performing Arts Center of LA County.  Road closures are listed below:

Affected Roads with Closures will include:

  • Figueroa between Olympic and Exposition
  • Chick Hearn (11th ) between Georgia and Olive
  • Pico between Cherry and Flower
  • Exposition between Figueroa and Vermont
  • All of Menlo
  • All of Coliseum Way
  • Flower between Olympic and Pico
  • 12th between Flower and Figueroa
  • Olive Street between 11th and 1st
  • 1st between Grand and Main
  • Main between 1st and Temple
  • Eastbound Temple between Grand and Main (single westbound lane will be available)
  • Northbound Grand between 1st and Temple (single southbound lane will be available)

Metro rail service will not be impacted, but you can expect heavier than usual traffic, as people will use the Metro to come to the race.  Please consult metro.net for revisions to Saturday's bus service.
