LOS ANGELES - City of Hope's Music and Entertainment Industry Group is bestowing its most prestigious philanthropic honor - The Spirit of Life® Award - to Timothy J. Leiweke, president and chief executive officer, AEG. Leiweke is receiving the honor at the 36th annual Spirit of Life gala dinner, which takes place January 13 at The Ritz-Carlton and J.W. Marriott hotels at L.A. LIVE. The gala is the first event to be held at the new Diamond Ballroom that is part of the Gallery Collection at the new hotels at L.A. LIVE. The presenting sponsor is San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino, and Flexjet is the official jet sponsor for the event.
The Spirit of Life Award is presented to individuals who exemplify the ideals and values that have guided City of Hope for nearly a century. The Spirit of Life, by its very name, represents the intangible qualities that make an individual's life worthy of admiration: their generosity, their ability to inspire and their desire to make a difference in the world.
The award is modeled after the original bronze statue that sits stop the fountain at the entrance to City of Hope. Crafted by artist Robert Russin, the statue celebrates the concept of family and reflects the institution's long-standing commitment to holistic care for those affected by cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
\"Tim Leiweke represents businesses that improve the community throughout the Los Angeles area,\" said Britta Bucholz, senior director of development, City of Hope. \"City of Hope also focuses on improving the community, where we treat one patient at a time with compassionate care, innovative science and translational research. We give patients the chance to live longer, better lives.\"
Under Leiweke's leadership, Los Angeles-based AEG, one of the world's leading presenters of live sports, music and entertainment, has led the industry in its overall commitment to bettering the lives of those in the community and surrounding areas in need. In just the last 10 years, AEG divisions such as STAPLES Center, AEG Live, the Los Angeles Kings, The Home Depot Center and the Los Angeles Galaxy have provided more than $65 million in support of local foundations, nonprofit organizations and charitable initiatives.
\"City of Hope's groundbreaking research has improved the lives of patients everywhere who face life-threatening diseases,\" said Leiweke. \"It's an honor to be recognized by an institution that is redefining the future of medicine and helping to make diseases like cancer curable, and one day preventable.\" Named as one of the \"100 Most Influential People\" in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times and \"Sports Executive of the Year\" by the Sports Business Journal, Leiweke has formed alliances with more than 50 divisions and companies to produce global live sports and music events in AEG-owned facilities and other venues. He is responsible for AEG divisions that create, produce and promote live entertainment, including AEG Live, AEG Facilities, AEG Global Partnerships, AEG Sports, AEG Merchandising, AEG Marketing, AEG Real Estate and AEG Creative.
Most recently, under Leiweke's direction, AEG has overseen the development and management of L.A. LIVE, the 4 million square foot, $2.5 billion downtown Los Angeles sports, residential and entertainment district featuring Club Nokia, Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE, the GRAMMY Museum, broadcast facilities for ESPN, over a dozen restaurants, bars and lounges and a 54-story, 1001-room convention \"headquarters\" destination (featuring The Ritz-Carlton and J.W. Marriott Hotels and 224 luxury condominiums, The Ritz-Carlton Residences at L.A. LIVE, all in a single tower) opening this month.
