21 venues to host recycling events through Monday, November 19th
LOS ANGELES, CA. (Wednesday, November 14, 2012) – In call attention to America Recycles Day, 21 venues in 15 cities affiliated with leading venue industry owners and operators AEG, have begun hosting recycling drives through Monday, November 19. For the third consecutive year, AEG will participate in America Recycles Day, the nation's only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling.
The national campaign, organized by Keep America Beautiful, brings together thousands of local organizers to host recycling events across the country to raise awareness and promote more recycling in the United States. The national recycling rate is currently at 34 percent. Recycling 75 percent of the nation's waste would create nearly 1.5 million jobs by 2030, according to a report by the Tellus Institute with Sound Resource Management. AEG and America Recycles Day supporters are raising awareness about the value of reducing, reusing and recycling everyday, all throughout the year.
AEG, a company that champions sustainability, is taking action now to set new recycling standards for the live sports and entertainment industry. The company's iconic sports and entertainment venues are the perfect backdrop for taking this national conversation to local communities and a symbol of the efforts made everyday to reduce the environmental impact of their operations across the globe. This America Recycles Day, 21 of AEG's clubs, theatres, arenas and stadia will host recycling and cause-related collection drives for staff and guests including five public e-waste collection events in four states with e-stewards certified recyclers. This is a part of the organization's new E-steward Enterprise commitment to use e-Stewards® licensed recyclers for responsible disposition and recycling of its own electronic equipment across North America.
As a company, AEG is dedicated to reducing its environmental impact which includes properly handling e-waste. Electronic equipment and gadgets have, at their end-of-life, become the largest toxic waste problem of our time. When disposed of improperly, the toxic materials in modern electronic equipment can cause cancer, reproductive disorders, and other health problems when the toxic materials are burned or dumped in landfills. The worst effects of e-waste are felt by the countries in Asia and Africa where U.S. e-waste is exported. The Basel Action Network developed the e-stewards certification program to ensure responsible e-waste solutions exist in the United States and to stop the mishandling and exporting of e-waste to other countries.
\"Deciding to become an E-Stewards Enterprise was an easy decision for us; we have at our core a commitment to be environmentally responsible from repairing and refurbish-ing equipment for longer use to the energy efficiency of our data centers,\" said Denise Taylor, Chief Information Officer, AEG. \"Now E-Stewards can help us ensure that e-waste recycling can truly help reduce our environmental impact without causing unintended harm.\"
\"Hosting America Recycles Day events provides a tangible way to engage our guests and staff in our day-to-day commitment to reduce our environmental footprint around the world,\" said Jennifer Regan, Global Sustainability Director, AEG \"At AEG, we believe that sharing these environmental stories and hosting these events will inspire our guests and employees to join us in making environmental responsible action fun.\"
\"AEG and its venues are taking an industry leadership role on hosting recycling events, particularly e-waste collection drives,\" said Martin Tull, Executive Director of the Green Sports Alliance. \"These events provide a great community benefit, helping to mitigate environmental hazards and engaging fans in environmental stewardship initiatives. Insights gained from the AEG venues will help all Alliance members host similar, successful events - amplifying AEG's impact even more.\"
\"We are very proud supporters of AEG's America Recycles Day events and commend their efforts to promote recycling across 15 cities in 12 states. Recycling is the easiest thing we can all do to improve our community, conserve natural resources and create green jobs. Collectively, through events like these, we aim to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year,\" said Brenda Pulley, Senior Vice President of Recycling at Keep America Beautiful and national program manager for America Recycles Day.
In 2010, AEG formalized its commitment to sustainability by launching an industry first AEG 1EARTH program and sustainability report, which outlined goals specific to energy, waste, water and emission-reduction targets. Tomorrow, AEG will be releasing its second sustainability report that includes an update on our efforts to achieving these reductions including our ongoing investments in recycling and food composting in Los Angeles, London and Sydney.
