Things You Didn't Know About New Lakers Coach, Frank Vogel

The Los Angeles Lakers have a new coach in town. On May 13 of 2019, the Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka, announced the hiring of new Head Coach, Frank Vogel. In order to get to know the franchise’s new leader a little better, here are a few interesting facts about him!

Began as Head Video Coordinator

Believe it or not, Frank Vogel began his NBA career as the Head Video Coordinator from 1997 to 2001 for the Boston Celtics under Rick Pitino. It was after that role that he became an Assistant Coach with the Celtics.

Folks such as Paul George, David West, and Ian Mahinmi have voiced their love for Vogel as a person. He also likes having former players on his staff with coaching experience. 

Past With The King 

​​​​​​He led the Indiana Pacers to the Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014, only to be defeated by the Miami Heat.

Vogel was named Head Coach of the Eastern Conference All-Star team in 2014. He was Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for games played in his fourth season aa the Pacers coach. .

Franchise Leader 

Frank Vogel is the Indiana Pacers' all-time franchise leader in NBA wins. After leading the Pacers, he went on to the Orlando Magic in 2016 and is now coaching the Los Angeles Lakers

Vogel played Division 3 basketball as a starter on the team at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He later transferred to the University of Kentucky in 1994. 

Majored in Biology

He majored in Biology to take advantage of his science credits that transferred over. Frank figured if it all didn't work out, he could be a high school coach and science teacher because it would probably be more in demand than a P.E. teacher.
