2010 American Music Awards Recap

2010 belongs to Justin Bieber. Last night's American Music Awards only helped to affirm it. The 16 year-old Canadian took all four awards that he was nominated for including Favorite Artist of the Year, beating out industry veterans Eminem, Usher, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry for the honor. Bieber is the youngest person ever to win the award.

The star studded night kicked off with a dynamic performance from Rihanna, who later won the award for Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist. She performed a medley of songs from her newly released album Loud, including the hit single What's My Name.

The AMAs are known for their highly elaborate stage performances and Black Eyed Peas certainly lived up that billing. The group, who also took home the awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Band, performed a rousing rendetion of their new song The Time while suspended several feet above the stage in small boxes.

The AMAs knew what they were doing in scheduling one of the night's most anticipated performances last. The boy band supergroup NKOTBSB performed a mash-up of songs from both New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys' illustrious catalog of hits. The group will set out on a world tour this summer. (Tickets for the STAPLES Center stop go on sale today.)

But just as the awards portion of the show belonged to Justin Bieber, so too did the night's performances. While most artists went for over-the-top, Bieber's performance of Pray, from his new acoustic album, was relatively stripped down and frill-free. But what it lacked in theatrics it certainly made up for in substance; The 16 year-old commands an audience with the skill of someone twice his age. The rendition of Pray, which began with Bieber sitting down at a piano and ended with him dancing alongside a gospel choir, received a standing ovation from the NOKIA Theatre crowd.
